“Where are you studying abroad?”
The first question many students are asked when announcing plans spend a semester overseas. The short answer, for me, was Copenhagen. I wanted to immerse myself in the history of the Vikings, which I had never previously studied in classes back in the U.S. I wanted to navigate my way through the colorful buildings on cobblestone streets, which I would eventually learn to tackle without twisting an ankle; to find a favorite coffee shop for writing papers. I wanted to explore the castles in and around the city, to embrace my inner seven year old at Tivoli, the second oldest amusement park in the world, and to stroll along the canal at Nyhavn, past the apartment where Hans Christian Andersen once lived. My city of choice was Copenhagen, but the answer to their question is really much less concrete. While my home base was a big apartment in the city center, my semester was spent exploring and studying in cities all over Europe.

For DIS Students, the semester is broken up by three longer breaks -
Travel Break One and Two, which are each nine days long, and April break, which spans five days. While everybody gets one of the Travel breaks and April Break to devote to independent travel or exploring Copenhagen, the other Travel Break is spent travelling with their core course on what is called a study tour. My class' tour was this past week in Budapest, Hungary! In addition to learning that Budapest is home to the world's best lemonade (seriously, insanely delicious), we learned a lot about the history of the country and how it has impacted the current day political and economic state of the country, as well as its citizens' well-being. Each day was broken up into a morning activity, free time for lunch and exploration, an afternoon activity and class meal, and then the evening to ourselves. If you'd like to read about our activities with DIS, keep reading! If you'd like to hear about what we did in our free time, you can find that link at the bottom of this post. The last stop on our grand tour was Barcelona, Spain.
My goals for this trip were to stop by the beach (done), take a photo with Gaudi's well known mosaic benches (done), and to make it to the Bunkers del Carmel to watch the sunset over the city (done). In addition to checking off my bucket list one item at a time, I managed to fill in the rest of the weekend with copious amounts of tapas, two new pairs of earrings, and quite a bit of climate-related confusion (I learned quite quickly that the locals are all still wearing marshmallow coats in 60 degree weather... oops). Keep reading for the top ten tips from our four days in Barcelona... Nice, France is a city that was quite aptly named.
From the minute we got off the plane, we were surrounded by blue waters, palm trees, and mountains covered in little houses. Ever since I did a project on the Cote D'azure in seventh grade French class, I have wanted to visit the area, and finally my dream was fulfilled. While the original plan was to spend three days in each city, the price difference in flights ended up being pretty large, and we were only in Nice for one full day and one afternoon. Even so, this was one of my favorite locations I have ever visited. I absolutely cannot wait to return and explore more of what the southern coast of France has to offer, but for now, here are the top ten tips from our time in Nice! It's a nice day for a trip to Rome...
When planning for study abroad, my list of cities I wanted to visit quickly became enormous, and impossible to achieve in a single semester. With this realization, I made a list of my top five locations that I wanted to see the most - among them: Rome, Nice, and Barcelona. This past week, I got a chance to go on a ten day trip around these three cities with two friends from Rochester and one friend from my classes here at DIS. Our first stop: Rome. I'm lucky enough to have a friend from Rochester studying abroad there, who was able to show us some of her favorite places. The weekend was packed with carbs, gelato, and my complete amazement at the Colosseum. Here are my top ten tips for how to make the most of your trip to Rome! |
