Nice, France is a city that was quite aptly named. From the minute we got off the plane, we were surrounded by blue waters, palm trees, and mountains covered in little houses. Ever since I did a project on the Cote D'azure in seventh grade French class, I have wanted to visit the area, and finally my dream was fulfilled. While the original plan was to spend three days in each city, the price difference in flights ended up being pretty large, and we were only in Nice for one full day and one afternoon. Even so, this was one of my favorite locations I have ever visited. I absolutely cannot wait to return and explore more of what the southern coast of France has to offer, but for now, here are the top ten tips from our time in Nice!
2. Get some fresh produce at Cours Saleya. The fresh market in Nice is located right near the Old Town, and has tons of Fresh produce, from spices to jams to dried fruit to flowers to lemon trees you can buy! They also have stands selling homemade soaps, beautiful prints (I bought a gorgeous watercolor print for 4 Euro), and other items. We bought lemons and fresh veggies to make dinner, and had lots of fun browsing the stands and smelling the flowers. Additional tip: On Mondays, the food market is replaced by an antique market selling all sorts of items, from books to jewelry to old globes! While we didn't see much because the stands were all packing up in anticipation of rain, it was nice getting a chance to see both markets! 3.Explore the Old Town One of the biggest drawing factors for visitors of Nice is the Old Town, which is full of little boutiques and shops. We wandered around and browsed the jewelry, clothes, and other items that we sadly did not have the room for in our carry on bags. In addition to the shops, its fun to just wander through the colorful, narrow streets, with flowers covering the windows and laundry hanging out to dry. 4. Go to the Beach! Late February is not exactly tourist season in the South of France, but I was glad we got to go when we did. I'm sure the beaches are gorgeous in the summer months as well, but it was really nice to walk along the shore without having to swerve in between other tourists. The best part of the beaches is that they are covered in stones instead of sand, which is both aesthetically pleasing and helpful for those who don't like having sand stuck in their shoes for weeks after a visit to the beach. 5. Hike Castle Hill! One of the best parts of the trip to Nice was our hike (really more of a walk) up Castle Hill, which had endless views of the ocean and the mountains from every possible angle. We stopped every time we got a chance to sit up on the walls and take some photos with the ocean backdrop. At one point along the walk, you end up next to a waterfall, which will cover you in mist. If you love the sound of rushing water as much as I do, make sure you take the route that brings you past the falls. If you keep walking up through the park, you will be able to stand above the waterfall and have a great view of the entire city. The park also had an abundance of flowers, mosaic artwork, and dogs that were downright hyped to be outside.
