We're not in Copenhagen anymore...This past weekend, I took my first trip outside of Denmark since my arrival - to Berlin, Germany! Many people know Berlin as the home of the infamous Berlin Wall, copious amounts of graffiti, and giant steins of beer. While these are all very prominent elements of the city that I did get to experience, my stay was defined more by Schnitzel, foggy views, and the best meal of my entire earthly existence...interspersed with intense frustration that nobody seems to accept a credit card. As a confused American who has been spoiled rotten by the incredible livability of Copenhagen, there were a few key differences that I wish I had known about beforehand. 1. Bring Cash. You will need it almost everywhere you go, because not many places in Berlin take cards. Our immense confusion with the city's reliance on cold, hard cash started right at the airport when we tried buying our train tickets to get to the hostel. After a stop at the ATM, we realized that not only did you need cash at this machine, but you needed coins. We eventually discovered more machines that accepted bills, and with the help of a nice Swedish couple, we were able to get our tickets and board the train just on time. 2. Get the 48 hour transportation card. This made our lives exactly 3,000 times easier and got us everywhere we needed to go. With all of our attention focused on figuring out which way the arrow was pointing on google maps, it would've taken far too much energy to figure out which ticket to get each time. The tickets were only 21 euros, and saved us a ton of time, money, and stress. 3. Don't forget to validate your ticket. There are small machines next to the ticket dispensers that will stamp the ticket with the time and date you bought it. If you don't do this, the ticket technically isn't valid and you could face a fine! Here is a helpful link about train travel in Berlin.
10. Come back. Although I'm sure I'll be saying this about a number of the places I visit, Berlin is now on a list of cities to which I know I'll be returning. The incredible impact of the historical monuments, edgy, graffiti covered streets, and infinite opportunities for cultural exploration are impossible to squeeze into a single visit, and our two days in the city did not do it justice.
Happy travels, Lydia
